History of Celery City Craft

Sanford has a rich agricultural history, earning its nickname “Celery City” due to the thriving celery farms that once dominated the area. The town’s connection to celery farming began after a devastating freeze on December 26, 1894, followed by an even harsher freeze on February 7, 1895, which wiped out the citrus groves.

With the groves destroyed and the local population shrinking, farmers pivoted to vegetables, particularly celery. The introduction of ice houses and refrigerated rail cars allowed farmers to preserve their crops, leading to Sanford becoming a major celery-producing hub in the early 1900s.

Celery City Craft pays tribute to this legacy, celebrating Sanford’s history through its décor and atmosphere. Since opening on May 25, 2014, the bar has been a staple in Historic Downtown Sanford, embracing the town’s agricultural roots while providing a vibrant gathering place for the community.

Sushi & Seoul joined Celery City Craft in November 2019 after building a strong following as a food truck, bringing an innovative culinary experience to the bar. Today, Celery City Craft continues to honor the history of Sanford while evolving as a beloved destination for craft beer, cocktails, and great food. The spirit of the “Celery City” lives on, blending the past with the present in a way that makes every visit a nod to the town’s remarkable journey.
